PTO Meeting

May 2, 2013

President Abby Crock called the 7:00 meeting to order with eight people present.  They were officers Jodie Casteel and Mary Pangle, teachers Janet Powers, Audrey Watson, Tiffany Speck, and  Mindy Theobald, and one additional parent.

After recitation of the pledge, the minutes of the April meeting were read.  Janet Powers made a motion to approve and Tiffany seconded.  The minutes stand approved.

In the absence of treasurer Alicia Warren, there was no report.

The cost of required BCI checks was discussed.  Two volunteers submitted requests for reimbursement and these will be given to Alicia to pay.  Several teachers will need to do this again before fall because it has been five years since we were first required to have the BCI check.  It could be cheaper for all if we purchased our own machine.  Other school districts have done this.  Tiffany will talk to Phil Theobald to see if he will find the cost of purchasing a scanner.

Photo albums were given to secretaries for their day.  PTO agreed last month to help Mr. Phillips provide lunch for the entire staff for Teacher Appreciation .  Abby made a motion to also give a $5 Subway gift card to all staff members.  The motion passed.

Our mother-son event will be Muffins with Mom (or grandmother or other important adult).  It will be open to P-K through 8th grade.  It will be 7:30 A.M. to 8:15 A.M. on Tuesday, May 21.  The menu will include school cereal, juice, and milk, coffee made by Audrey, and muffins.  All present will make at least one dozen muffins.  We’ll need to use plastic tablecloths to decorate a little.  Jodie will make a flyer to send home to inform everyone.

The dance, won by Alysha Matson,  that was a prize at the Spring Fling will be held May 24th from 7:00 to 9:00.  Mr. Stiver’s class will have free admission, and all other students will pay $1.

Students who have perfect attendance for the entire year will be given a pair of Redskin sunglasses. Mary, with the help of Kathy Ramsey, will take care of this.

Jodie had the totals for box tops for April.  Mrs. Schafer’s class won for the month.  The cut off for submissions for May will be May 24th.  A pizza lunch will be the prize for the class that wins for the year.

Because of the Fun Day planned by the Health Dept. on May 22, PTO will not plan to have the 5K Fitness Day that was previously discussed.  Instead, we will try to plan something as a welcome back in the fall.

The next meeting will be Thursday, August 1, at 7:00.

Audrey Watson made a motion to adjourn and Janet Powers seconded it.

Respectfully submitted,

Mary Pangle

Secretary

PTO Meeting        3-7-13

President Abby Crock called the 7:00 meeting to order with the recitation of the pledge.  Present were officers Jodie Casteel and Mary Pangle, teachers Brandey Mincks, Janet Powers, Judy Brown, Audrey Watson, Mindy Theobald, Philip Theobald, and Tiffany Speck, Joan Jackson, Mr. Phillips, and two additional parents.

The minutes of the February meeting were read.  Tiffany Speck made a motion to approve and Mindy Theobald seconded.  The minutes stand approved as read.

The box top program is now running smoothly.  Mary recently sent in more than $1700 worth of box tops.

The incentive program was discussed again.  It was decided that we will leave the wish list as it is.  We also still need to decide about the document cameras.  Philip said that he thinks we need about 20.  We will decide about this in April.

Audrey Watson reported that Read Across America went well and the teachers who were present agreed.

Abby reported that she had asked about moving the class pictures at the high school instead of buying covering for the windows.  She has not heard back about this at this time.

Plans for the Spring Fling were discussed:

  • Kristen Long said that requesting donations from the businesses is going well.
  • Audrey and Abby Davis reported that they were doing fine with scheduling workers.
  • Brandey Mincks volunteered to organize the pie in the face contest.
  • Jodie reported that she plans to put some of our fund raiser items in the Country Store and the silent auction.

There was a discussion about how we can promote the levy.  Judy and Abby will get t-shirts for the teachers to wear at the Spring Fling.  They will say “Vote Yes” or something along that line.

Abby reported that she read the PTO magazine and there was an article about an art club and an art show.  She plans to discuss this at a future meeting.

Janet Powers reported that the “Computers for Education” program is set to begin on March 18 when booklets will be sent home.  PTO gets 50 cents for every completed postcard that is returned.  There is a reward for the students who participate and a robot for the grand prize.

A Mother-Son event is still on the table.  Jodie will talk to Mr. Phillips about a date in late April.  This, too, will be for Pre-K to grade 4.  We could possibly have a dance for grades 5 and 6 and have it be a fund raiser.

The next meeting will be April 11 at 3:30.

Janet Powers made a motion to adjourn and Jodie Casteel seconded.

Respectfully submitted,

Mary Pangle

Secretary

PTO Meeting

February 14, 2013

President Abby Crock called the 3:30 meeting to order by leading the recitation of the pledge.  Present were officers Mary Pangle, Jodie Casteel, and Alicia Warren.  Also present were teachers Judy Brown, Connie McConnell, Philip Theobald, Mindy Theobald, Tiffany Speck, Janet Crum, Janet Powers, Laura McComb, Audrey Watson, and two additional parents.

The minutes of the January meeting were read.  There was a question about the gold tickets and who will give them to students who return box tops on the collection sheets.  It was clarified that the teachers who are turning in the sheets do not need to give the gold tickets.  Mindy Theobald made a motion to approve and Kristin Long seconded.  The minutes stand approved.

Amy Phelps, from Stowe, Ohio, presented information about a fund raiser.  It is a Santa Secret Shop. No action was taken at the end of the presentation.

Abby and Jodie reported that the craft night was held during conferences the first night from 4:00 to 7:00.  Some students stayed all night, which created a small problem.  All supplies were used up and they found that a craft was needed that required a longer time to complete.  The positive feedback that they received indicates that craft night should be continued in the future.

The Father/Daughter dance was held and over 100 pictures were taken.  Jodie reported that CES got more new likes on Facebook.  Some complained that older girls should have been invited but it would have made it too crowded.  We do need a good idea for a Mother/Son event.  Suggestions already include a dance and Muffins with Mom.

Heather Frizzell was asked by Julia Hall to take over Box Tops and she agreed.  Jodie Casteel will help her do this.

Abby suggested that one of our future events for the whole family would be to host a 5K with a one mile Fun Run.  It could be a fund raiser on a Saturday morning in May and would only take about 2 hours.  We will need to discuss this more as it gets closer to May.

The Spring Fling has been set for Friday, March 15.

  • Audrey Watson and Abby Davis will be in charge of getting volunteers to work.  They were reminded to contact Susan Gibeaut and the NHS for possible student workers.  Teachers should put a request on the homework sheet and tell parents to call Audrey at 581-1989 if they are able to volunteer to work.   Phil Theobald will purchase one document camera for a Smart Board and it will be won by a classroom.  Teachers will enter the drawing one time for each hour worked and one time for each parent recruited from their classrooms.
  • Heidi Postlethwait, with help from Abby Crock, will be in charge of the games.
  • Abby Crock will get the prizes for the raffle with the help of Kristen Long.
  • Kristen will contact the businesses to get donations for the Country Store and Silent Auction.
  • Raffle tickets need to be sold during the Spring fling and our spirit items can be displayed and sold at the same table.
  • Tiffany Speck and Laura McComb will be in charge of the egg decorating contest.
  • Jodie and Kristen will be in charge of setting up the Country Store and making the tickets in the envelopes.
  • Alicia has ordered some of the prizes and will order more.

In other business, Mrs. Denice Iniquez-LaRue wants the PTO to purchase gift cards that will be used as rewards for good behavior.  The student council will reimburse PTO for the entire cost.  Jodie made a motion to do this and Janet Powers seconded.  The motion passed.

Audrey Watson asked for help for Read Across America.  It will be the beginning of March in conjunction with the birthday of Dr. Seuss on March 1.  She will have a meeting Tuesday at 2:45.

Phil Theobald asked for help from PTO.  He presented information about document cameras.  Some are already purchased and in use but about 20 are still needed.  Judy Brown, who uses one, highly recommends them.  The cost is $400 for a camera that is durable and functional.  Also, 100 iPads will be purchased with money from a grant and cases are needed for them.  The iPads will be used for testing and for AR and other programs.  Each class will get 3.  The cases that Phil wants are $43 each.  Abby made a motion to purchase the cases and Mindy seconded.  The vote to purchase the cases was unanimous.  No action was taken on the document cameras.  A suggestion was made that we buy cameras instead of the Wish List next year.   The incentive program will be discussed at a future meeting.

Alicia reported that Jane Smith, secretary at the high school, requested that PTO purchase darkening cling for some windows so that the class pictures do not fade even more than they have.  Before spending any money Abby will check to see if the pictures can be moved away from the windows.

The next PTO meeting will be held on Thursday, March 7, at 7:00 in the cafeteria.

Respectfully submitted,

Mary Pangle

Secretary

PTO Meeting

January 3, 2013

Vice-President Jodie Casteel called the 7:00 meeting to order and led the recitation of the pledge. Present were Judy Brown, Janet Powers, Mindy Theobald, and Mr. Phillips.

Jodie read the minutes from the December meeting. Mindy made a motion to approve and Judy seconded it. The minutes were approved as read.

Jodie gave a quick treasurer’s report. We paid $617.50 to the author for Right-to-Read Week. We spent $125.00 in ingredients for Christmas cookies and treats for the staff.

There is no final report for the spirit wear.  There was only one complaint/concern because the company would not fix a problem. We need to continue to have the items coming in 2-3 days prior to break.

Biddy Basketball tournaments will be Jan. 25-27/Feb. 2-3. We need to sell our items on Jan. 26 and Feb. 2.

Kathy Schafer won the December Box Tops. When students return the papers with the Box Tops, the teacher needs to give them a gold ticket.

New Business:

We would like to have a free “family-fun” craft evening from 6-7:30. We could do it Jan. 31 during conferences. Jodie and Abby will set this up.

February activity will be a Father/Daughter Dance on Feb. 8. Grades Pre-K through 4 will participate. The time is 6-8 and Russ Powers will be the DJ.

The Spring Fling will be 5-9 on March 15. (March 31 is Easter)

Judy Brown will run the first shift of the kitchen and Janet Powers will run the second shift.

Mr. Phillips asked us to purchase some new tables for the computer lab. Janet made a motion to purchase the tables and Mindy seconded it. It was a unanimous vote to purchase the tables.

We discussed the next meeting and moved it to the 2nd week, due to conferences. The next meeting will be February 14, at 3:30 in the Library.

Mr. Phillips made a motion to adjourn at 7:50.

At the close of the meeting, Mindy made a motion to purchase the document cameras for the teachers and Judy seconded it. The vote was tabled until the February meeting.

Respectfully submitted (in the absence of Mary Pangle),

Janet Powers
